The Nomadwater Sect’s journey through the jungle started on a path dense with foliage, one that soon opened up in ways that showed that the Brethren maintained small roads that threaded out toward the villages and cities of the Tribute Islands.

The assassins’ villa sat on stilts near a large river, one with flowing black water. Logs floated on the river and yellow-bellied crocodiles occasionally popped their heads up as the group took a ramp up to the villa. Even if it was raised, the Brethren still had plenty of room in the trees, their villa consisting of multiple hatched buildings, including one that was as large as some of the warrior amphitheaters Jaden had seen in the capital city of E’Kanth.

“This is where we will do this,” Iris told all of them as she gestured to the largest building in the cluster.

Above, monkeys perched in the trees, watching the proceedings intently and chittering amongst themselves. Jaden ignore the grumbling from Rhodes about how the monkeys had sold them out, especially after the big man saw all the simian statues in the amphitheater, which were crafted out of a red timber that had aged over the years.

“Damn monkeys,” Rhodes said as he turned back to the leader of the Brethren. “Well. We’re here. Who are we going to fight?” He gestured for some of them to step up. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Straight to the point,” Iris said, rather than provide an answer. “That can be beneficial in our line of work.”

“You’re assassins,” Kae reminded them.

“Yes, we are,” Iris said, “but we’re so much more than that. We have a code. Our work for the Four Kingdoms will forever be hidden. You won’t find the truth in any history book, and you may not even find it in the Emperor’s private archives, yet our group has played a pivotal role in the course of the Sagaland’s history. If you ever make it to the capital city, and are able to see the great archives, look for books that have a monkey seal on them.”

“Monkey seal?” Bota asked. “Is that some kind of monkey I have never heard of?”

“Good one, Handsome. And good to know,” Rhodes said, cracking his knuckles. “But we didn’t come here for a history lesson.”

“Very well.” Iris Blindfeather nodded and nine of the Brethren assassins that had been waiting with the monkeys joined her.

“Not great odds,” Rhodes said under his breath as he sized their nine opponents up. The monkey-masked assassins were currently stretching or speaking quietly to each other while the spectators got settled.

Luca and Bota, who stood with Iris, looked like they wanted to step forward. The galecaller’s anger was the first to boil over as she swiveled to Iris. “How is nine on three fair?”

Iris didn’t even look at her, the assassin’s eyes focused on Jaden, Kae, and Rhodes instead. “Who said anything about it being fair?”

“What are the rules?” Rhodes asked. “Or better, when would you like me to stop? I guess that’s the best way to put it.
